Getting Started in Divinum

A first-hour Warden route for the 28 August 2026 Steam launch.

Getting Started

Divinum is easier to love than it is to start well. The prologue looks like a pretty 2D Metroidvania, then the game asks you to juggle, parry, and spend mana like a character-action title. This page is the onboarding pass: buy or demo on Steam, learn the HUD, grab early shards, and leave the first area with a plan instead of a mashed light attack.

Sigil Games released the full game on 28 August 2026 for Windows and macOS. It is single-player only. Steam Cloud, achievements, family sharing, full controller support, and a keyboard-only option are all on the store page. If your hands hate dense 2D action, read controls and Steam Deck notes before you sink an evening into cleansing trials.

Install, demo, and settings

Install from Steam. The demo is still listed, which is useful if you want a combat slice without paying the $14.99 list price (a short launch discount was also running). After the first boot:

  • Set 16:9 if you can. The store page calls it recommended.
  • Turn on camera comfort options if motion in 2D side-scrollers bothers you.
  • Split volume sliders so music does not bury swing cues. Several launch reviews praise how musical the sword sounds — you want to hear them.
  • Pick keyboard or pad and stay there for an hour. Mixing mid-fight is how people drop dashes.

Then open system requirements only if the game stutters. Official minimums are modest (an i3-6100 / Ryzen 3 1200 class CPU, 4 GB RAM, GTX 560 Ti or Intel Iris Xe, about 1 GB disk). One launch review still reported potato-PC hitching, so cap frames if your GPU fans scream.

Read the HUD before you greed

Top left is your life. Red orbs are hit points; extra orbs come from life shards you find in the world, not from a level-up screen. The blue bar is mana. Under that sits a weapon icon — Fjør’s two primary arms are meant to be swapped, not ignored. A cyan or green meter nearby tracks Fury, which fills when you mix hits, skills, and perfect blocks. Top right is the combo counter. If that number dies, you are mashing one button again.

Boss rooms add a named health bar, such as the Elite Sentinel of Soulfire. Optional challenge rooms do not always warn you with a title card, so treat any gated arena as a trial. Details live on bosses and trials.

First-hour route

  1. Finish the story beats in front of you. Fjør is a young warrior born under the Fate of the Guardian. You do not need the whole lore dump on day one, but talk to everyone once. Launch reviews note that some conversations lack character portraits, so names can blur. When in doubt, replay the line.
  2. Practise launch timing on slimes and fodder. Many early enemies must be stunned before they will stay in a juggle. A grounded string into an uppercut (hold up plus attack) is the default lift. A quick tap of the same input keeps you on the floor — that is the alternate uppercut added in the late demo.
  3. Touch the map key. Default is Tab on keyboard and Select on a pad. Divinum is an island with surface forests, caves, catacombs, and ruins. If you wander without the map, you will miss Sanctite and shards. See map exploration.
  4. Pick up everything that sparkles. Sanctite is the pickup currency. Later builds added a magnet so it is less annoying to collect. Life shards and mana shards are the real prizes; the rune menu shows how many you have.
  5. Visit the shop once you have a pile. The shop UI can list more items than it did in playtests. Buy tools that change a fight, not mental +5% comfort.
  6. Slot the first Runes you find. Official copy is blunt: you will not find boring percent sticks. Even an early Rune can add explosions, lightning, or a painful trade-off. Park the theory on rune builds.

Habits that save the first boss

Do not hold block as a lifestyle. A normal block window is fairly wide after the 0.39 demo tuning, but a block that drains the last of your mana can stun you. Perfect blocks prevent the hit and shove the enemy toward a stun, at a mana price. If you press too early you still take a pip and still pay mana. That is the whole combo guide in four sentences.

Dash through telegraphs, not through boredom. There is no contact damage from idle enemy bodies. You can stand in a crowd until a swing starts. People who came from Hollow Knight keep shielding empty air.

Swat projectiles and debris. Launch-week players specifically mention batting shots back and knocking falling chunks into enemies. If a room is full of junk, that junk is a weapon.

Leave if you clip. A known launch bug can trigger when you climb a ledge and jump in the same moment: Fjør glitches, walks through walls, and gains infinite jumps until you quit to the menu. A dodge sometimes frees you. Do not keep playing inside the void. Track it on launch notes.

What to unlock next

After the prologue, your job is not to rush the credits. Bank shards, learn both weapons (see weapons), and attempt a low-tier cleansing ritual only when your combo counter regularly survives a full room. If a trial is labelled as a higher tier, walk away and change the skill and Fury plan. Steam reviews are full of people who returned later with a new Rune and suddenly understood the room.

When you want a second opinion on feel, watch the embedded first-hour footage mid-page, then compare it with the review. The wiki is unofficial; patches will land. The roadmap explains what Sigil Games said they will fix first: bugs, balance, achievement localisation, and extra challenge content.

Checklist before you close the game

  • Controller or keyboard rebound so dash and block are not a claw grip.
  • At least one extra life shard if the first hard room already two-shots you.
  • One Rune that you can explain in a sentence.
  • Map button in muscle memory.
  • A mental note of the ledge-clip workaround.

Do that, and Divinum stops feeling like a pretty demo and starts feeling like the stylish island campaign the store page promised.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is Divinum free to play?

No. It is a premium Steam release with a $14.99 list price and a short introductory discount after the 28 August 2026 launch. A demo remains available.

Should I play on keyboard or controller?

Both work. The store lists full controller support and a keyboard-only option. Lock one scheme in controls and practise dashes there.

What should I collect first?

Life shards, mana shards, and Sanctite. Shards expand the HUD; Sanctite funds the shop. Routing tips are in map exploration.
